According to legends, Gajapati King of Puri, Purushottam Dev, had discovered the statue of Ganesha, embedded in the hollow of two trees, ‘Vara’ and ‘Aswastha’. He then with the help of the pundits travelling with him, had consecrated the deity and since then the place had become an important centre of Ganapataya sect.
The unique shrine of Panchama Ganesh or Siddha Binayaka is located at Panchama, a small village in Ganjam district, 12 kms away from Berhampur near Andhra-Odisha border.
The idol still remains inside the trunk of the large intertwined trees and a temple has been built around it. Every year lakhs and lakhs of devotees from Odisha and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh visit this shrine on the day of Ganesh Chaturthi.
