Bhubaneswar: In a major setback to the Orissa Government over alleged irregularity in Hirakud dam flood water management, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Monday issued notice to the State Government asking to submit a report on it, within four weeks, on the allegations that the recent floods were man made due to the mishandling of the water of Hirakud dam and opening of the gates.

Acting on a petition filed by the India Media Centre, the commission has ordered the Secretary of Water Resources Department to submit a detailed report failing which, would start hearing sue motto. The petition stated that the flood in last August was ‘manmade’ avoiding the curve rule guidelines of the reservoir. In its petition the petitioner has said that around 80 peoples died while 19 districts were affected by the flood.

It is stated that the Governor has sought a report from the State Government on this issue and advised to enquire it by technicians and professionals. Earlier to this the opposition parties had slammed the Government and demanded the resignation of the Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik as he holds the water resources portfolio with him.
