Bhubaneswar: The additional district sessions court on Saturday sentenced gangster Sandeep Acharya alias Raja and his associate Akshaya Behera alias Chagala to four year jail term for kidnapping Arun Mantri.
According to the prosecution, Raja and Chagala kidnapped Arun Mantri in a Pulsar bike, eight days after shooting down Judo Coach Biranchi Das. Expressing happiness over the judgment, Arun Mantri said that “I am speechless after hearing the judgement and am very happy that they were finally convicted.”
“All the charges leveled against the duo were found true,” said Public Prosecutor Pradyumna Patnaik.
It is stated that Raja and his associate Chagala were earlier sentenced to life imprisonment for killing Judo Coach Biranchi Das, brother of model Bidusmita, who had groomed the world’s youngest marathon runner Budhia Singh. The court has also imposed fine of Rs 2,000 each on the two convicts.
The court examined 17 witnesses out of 20 and pronounced punishments to them under Section 365 (kidnapping) 506 (threatening) under Indian Penal Code (IPC), and under Section 25 and Section 27 of the Arms Act.
Starlet Bidusmita had lodged a complaint against the gangster accusing him of kidnapping her brother Arun Mantri. Raja’s lawyer Swagat Roy said his client will appeal against the judgement in the upper court.
