New Delhi: The country fondly paid homage to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her 27th death anniversary today.

A remembrance function was held at Shakti Sthal, the site on the banks of the Yamuna river where Mrs. Gandhi was cremated.

President Pratibha Devi Singh Patil, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi along with others paid floral tributes to the assassinated leader.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi will present the 26th Indira Gandhi award for national integration to environmentalist and former Union Minister Mohan Dharia.

The former Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi was assassinated by two of her Sikh bodyguards: Satwant Singh and Beant Singh on Oct 31, 1984.

The 136th Birth anniversary of the country’s first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel is also being observed today.
