Bhubaneswar: ‘Nirvan’, the book written by Mr. Manoj Kumar Mohapatra and awarded by Odisha Sahitya Academy for the year 2007 is under scanner. Now the Academy is examining on the originality of the Odia writing after an allegation received from an intellectual forum saying that it was copied from a popular English work.
‘Mukta Sahitya Mancha’, a forum of Odia writers and critics, has raised serious questions before the Odisha Sahitya Academy on the issue. The forum has alleged that ‘Nirvan’ is a copy of the English book ‘Old Path White Cloud’ written by Vietnamese Buddhist. Writer of the Odia book, ‘Nirvan’, has mentioned in the foreword section of the book that he was influenced by the book ‘Old Path White Clouds’. But ‘Mukta Sahitya Mancha’ has alleged that, it was actually no influence. Rather the writer of the Odia book has translated portions directly from the original English book. The forum has described this as a shameful act and demanded before the Academy to withdraw the award as soon as possible.
Mr. Asit Mohanty, renowned writer and member of the forum has confirmed to Odisha360 that they have received a communication from the Secretary, Odisha Sahitya Academy, on the matter. Academy has assured them on taking of appropriate action, as per law. However, it is further learnt that some members of the forum are preparing to file Public Interest Litigation (PIL) before the High Court if the Academy fails to take timely action.
It is also learnt that, Academy authorities had asked the writer of the Odia book to clarify on the allegations and already received the reply. The Academy has also sent the original English book along with the Odia award winning title to the judges (who had reviewed the book and recommended for the award) to compare both the works and forward their comments to the Academy. An action from the Academy is expected soon.
