Odisha Government Asks Universities to Develop Centre of Excellence

Bhubaneswar: In a high level meeting under the Chairmanship of Chief Secretary, Mr. Bijay Kumar Patnaik, at the State Secretariat on Wednesday, Mr Patnaik reviewed the works in all the Universities and asked the Vice Chancellors of Utkal, Sambalpur and Berhampur University to come up with definite action plan to develop some of their departments into centres of excellence.

In this context Utkal University identified Physics, Chemistry, Geology, Psychology and Anthropology departments. Sambalpur University identified Sociology, English, Economics Physics and Chemistry departments, where as the Berhampur University identified History, Industrial Relations, Physics, Zoology and Botany department to be developed into centers of excellence.

The Vice Chancellors of the three Universities were asked to recruit the best talents as teaching faculties and not to compromise on quality of education in their campus.

Discussing on the issues related to the utilisation of funds provided by the University Grants Commission (UGC), Mr. Patnaik, directed the VC’s of all the Universities to take steps against the ones who are not using the fund appropriately and stressed them to take necessary steps to explore the possibility of getting more UGC grants.

Further more it was decided that a high level committee constituting the Vice-Chancellors of the three Universities, Secretary of Higher Education, and Officers of Finance Department will be formed who will chalk out the possible proposals to be submitted to UGC for the 12th Plan period.
