Bhubaneswar: Noted social activist and Padmashri awardee Tulsi Munda on Monday demanded the Odisha Government to provide employment to the people who have lost their jobs due to the closure of several mines in Keonjhar district.
In a Press Meet, Ms Munda told newspersons that several people were thrown out of their jobs and are leading a miserable life after the closure of mines.
Adding more she said, when the illegalities in the mining sector was continuing since long why the Government didn’t take immediate steps and that now when most of the people have taken mines as their source of livelihood, the closing of the mines is having adverse effects on their life where the workers have become virtually jobless and are living in distressed condition.
Moreover she regretted that the inquiry into the smuggling of minerals started by the Government five years back is not yet over .
Ms. Munda said that “the M B Shah Commission, constituted by the Union government, is arriving shortly in Odisha to probe the theft of minerals. At the same time it should also look into the condition of unemployed peoples and submit a report to the Government suggesting steps to be taken to resolve the problems of the poor tribals.”
