Bhubaneswar: A local Congress leader and a supporter of the anti-Posco group was arrested on Thursday, a day after the violent clash between the pro-Posco and the anti-Posco activists at the Bose Callis point, where in one person was killed and as many as 25 persons were injured.
Congress leader Jayant Biswal was arrested on the basis of an FIR filed by the brother of the deceased Dwijambar Swain.
Sources said that Biswal was amongst the four against whom a complaint had been lodged in connection with the death of Dwijambar Swain on the half-built coastal road linking Paradip and Posco’s proposed plant site area.
Besides Biswal, cases were filed against former CPI MLA Narayan Reddy, Posco, Pratirodh Sangram Samiti (PPSS) Secretary Sisir Mohapatra and PPSS’ Women Wing Chief Manorama Khatua.
With tension mounting in the area, police had deployed about five platoons of force at different places of the proposed plant site area.
Protesting Wednesday’s violence, six non-BJD parties held a meeting. The parties involved in the protest meeting included Congress, CPI, and CPI(M). While anti-Posco brigade under the banner of PPSS had been staging agitation protesting yesterday’s violence, local people blocked NH-5 (A) and Cuttack-Paradip Road halting communication to the port town. The agitators are demanding a compensation of Rs 25 lakhs and a job for the daughter of the deceased, besides ordering CBI probe into the matter and threatened to continue the agitation until their demands are fulfilled.
