Bhubaneswar: Opposition parties on Thursday demanded a probe into the killing of a pro-Posco activist on Wednesday in a clash near the project site of Posco in Jagatsinghpur, Odisha.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said his Government will take necessary action against those responsible for the incident, but Opposition leaders said they were not happy the way things had evolved and demanded a judicial inquiry.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also accused the Government of crushing the anti-Posco agitation by deploying “goons” in the area.
“The Government is totally responsible for the present situation. It is not for the first time that such an unpleasant incident has occurred,” said Jual Oram, State BJP President.
“Though CM Naveen Patnaik had said industrialisation will not be imposed on the people, he is doing just the opposite”, said Narasingha Mishra, Senior Congress Leader.
The clash occurred on Wednesday when the anti-Posco activists attacked the pro-Posco activists and threw bombs at them.
It is noteworthy to mention that the foundation stone for the 10-km coastal road was laid in August but work had stopped midway after local protests. Although the work had resumed on Tuesday, authorities had to halt it again after Wednesday’s clash.
Meanwhile leaders from different Opposition parties had organised meetings and protest demonstrations at ‘Patana Haat’ in Kujanga disrtict.
