Bhubaneswar: The State Government on Friday shifted senior IAS officer Priyabrata Patnaik from the post of Chairman-cum-managing director of Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDCO).

The violent clash at the Posco site at Kujang in Jagatsinghpur district on Wednesday, which resulted in the death of a made State Government to take this step.

Patnaik has been posted as Additional Chief Secretary, Public Grievance and Pension Administration Department. Panchayati Raj Secretary Pradip Kumar Jena has been given the additional charge of IDCO CMD. The transfer came two days after the murder of a person in the clash between anti-Posco activists and people engaged by a local construction company, sources said.

Raising the issue through an adjournment motion in the Assembly, Congress Chief Whip Prasad Harichandan and party member bayed for Patnaik’s head alleging that he lost foresight before allowing construction of the coastal road for transportation of company materials to the proposed site, knowing that violence would erupt at the site.

While some leaders demanded Patnaik’s resignation, some other demanded his immediate arrest. The Government had to face embarrassing situation in the State Assembly on different questions raised by opposition members regarding Patnaik’s negative role. In order to save the Government from further embarrassment, the Chief Minister Naveen Patanaik took a right decision at the right time, said a senior bureaucrat.
