Bhubaneswar: Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar on Monday suggested setting up a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to study the existing conditions of farmers and about their suicides in different parts of the country.
In a discusssion on agrarian crisis in the Rajya Sabha, Pawar said, there was a need for an in-depth study on farmers’ suicide and the recommendations of the JPC will help the Government in improving the conditions of the farmers.
Sources said, the party member welcomed the suggestions. However the Opposition staged a walkout showing dissatisfaction over the issue.
Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said, banks have been instructed to provide ‘kisan credit’ cards and to fill the gaps in providing aid to farmers.The farmers those who pay their loan interest on time are entitled to have 4 percent interest rate this year.
Pawar said, the States should take the initiative and try to purchase paddy at minimum price and should check distress sale of farm produce. Whatever be their cost, the expenditure in gaining the farm produce will be borne by the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and finally by the Government of India.
