Bhubaneswar: The proposal for 10 agro-polytechnics by the Orissa University of Agriculture and Technolgy (OUAT) in the agro-climatic zones has been approved by the State Government.

The proposed polytechnics would come up by the next academic session which will begin in July-August. These polytechnics would offer two-year diploma course for the plus-II pass-outs in the disciplines of agriculture, fisheries, animal science and horticulture. While seven polytechnic will impart training on agriculture and remaining one each will be dedicated for fisheries,horticulture and animal science respectively, said sources.

Vice Chancellor, OUAT, D.P Ray said, “The approval for recruitment of faculty and other technical staff in the institutions is already received by the State Government. Other procedures have also started for opening this branch by the University in next academic year.”

These polytechnics would help the agro-technicians in earning by doing agricultural jobs for the farmers on payment basis in various fields like seed production, food processing, preservation and bio-fertiliser production and can convince the local farmers about low-risk technologies and their applications for better yields. The agro-polytechnics would function close to agriculture research stations and Krishi Vigyan Kendras, said Ray.
