Bhubaneswar: Western Odisha has been again in news due to starvation deaths.

This year in Sambalpur tribal Siba Naik (65) died of malnutrition and hunger on July 8.

Sources said two years ago, Jhintu Bariha of Chabripali village under Khaprakhol block of Bolangir died along with five members of his family due to malnutrition. A dalit worker Kapil Hans of Govindpur village of Rairakhol block died of starvation in July this year. Two months later, Jhira Kisan (60), a woman from Dhudipali village under Jamankira block died under similar circumstances.

On 4th December, Jatra Khailar (60) of San Dangaghat village in Reamal block of Deogarh district died of malnutrition. Similarly, Bishnu Majhi (42) and his wife Parbati (37) of Sargimunda village in Bolangir district died for the same reason.

As per sources the figure could be higher with many such deaths going unreported in this part of the State. A number of problem such as prolonged malnutrition, non-implementation of Government schemes, starvation etc is witnessed here.

The schemes like MGNREGS, Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS), Old Age Pension and Public Distribution System are not implemented properly. In addition to that the neither the victims had a BPL card nor were they getting proper healthcare facilities.
