Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Government on Friday conveyed its preparedness for the elections of the Gram Panchyat Ward members, Sarpanch, Samiti members for Panchayat Samitis and Parishad members for Zilla Parishad, as per the recommendation of the State Election Commission (SEC).
Making a statement in the State Assembly, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Raghunath Mohanty said, Balamukunda Das had moved the High Court challenging the reservation of seats for the posts of Sarpanches in Gram Panchayts under the Dunguripal Panchayat Samiti by the Sonepur District Collector.
But the High Court had fixed the next date of hearing of the case on 2nd January, 2012, without passing any interim order.
Mr. Mohanty said, since the High Court did not pass any interim order, the Government today issued the notification as per the recommendation of the SEC who will fix the dates of the elections.
The last Panchayat elections were held on February-March, 2007.
The Minister said the tenure of the elected representatives would be over by the second week of March 2012.
As per sources, Panchyat polls will be held in all the Gram Panchyats except in the Kujang block og Jagatsinghpur.
