Bhubaneswar: The Winter Session of the Assembly was adjourned sine die on Saturday, six days before the original schedule, to end on December 31, 2011.

Hours after the State Election Commission declared the schedule for the three-tier panchayat polls, Speaker Pradip Kumar Amat declared sine die closure of the House following a motion moved by Government Chief Whip Rabi Narayan Pani. The motion was passed through voice vote even as Opposition Congress members walked out in protest regarding curtailment of the session.

Talking to the mediapersons, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said the session was curtailed to enable the MLAs to go to their constituencies for the panchayat polls. However, Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh criticised the Government’s decision on reducing the sitting days of the House.

Singh said discussion on many important issues and bills were pending, and also an all-party meeting should have been called before announcement of the adjournment of the House.

Moreover, the members, led by Singh, walked out accusing the Government of avoiding the House.
