Bhubaneswar: Veteran Congress leader and former Minister Ramachandra Ulaka died of heart attack in the early hours of Sunday at the Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar.
However controversy arouse after his body reached his native place here from Bhubaneswar for cremation amidst allegation that the tribal leader was murdered.
As Ulaka’s body was being taken in a procession, Shiva Shankar Ulaka, eldest son of the first wife of the Congress leader, alleged that their father was “murdered” by the second wife and her sons for property.
In view of the sudden development, the cremation was put on hold, police said.
Suspecting that their father was killed Shiva Shankar had filed a complaint on Sunday night at Rayagada police station, police said.
Based on the complaint, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Rayagada, VR Rao has asked to get the report of the doctor who was on duty and examined Ulaka, so that police could intervene in the matter and deal with the situation and decided that a post-mortem would be performed if necessary.
Mortal remains of veteran tribal Congress leader and former Odisha Minister Ramachandra Ulaka were consigned to flames on Monday after a post-mortem. The post-mortem was performed at the District Headquarters Hospital, Rayagada.
Thereafter, the body of the Congress leader was taken in a procession to the local party office where people from different walks of life paid their last respect to the departed leader. The body was then taken in a procession and the last rites were performed on the bank of Langulia river, Rayagada where the body was cremated.
His three sons Gouri Shankar, Umashankar ans Saptagiri Ulaka from the three wives lit the pyre.
