Phulbani: Christians in Kandhamal district celebrated Christmas with joy and enthusiasm amidst elaborate security arrangements on Sunday.
The celebrations remained peaceful as elaborate security arrangements were made to prevent any untoward incident.
Security personnel were deployed in strength at places of worship, prayer halls and Christian-inhabited areas, while streets were being patrolled and anti-riot vehicles remained in a State of preparedness to meet any eventuality, a senior police official said.
The Kui Samaj Seva Samiti (KSSS) a fringe group of fundamentalists took out a procession at the Barakhama area under Baliguda police limits on Sunday, to mark its Martyr’s day. It was on this day in 2007, a tribal leader Khageswar Mallick was killed in police encounter. Since then the Samiti has been observing this day as Martyr’s day.
