Berhampur: Women weightlifters from Odisha have made the State proud by bagging a total of eight gold medals at the National Weightlifting Championship.
While Tikina Gopal and Minati Sethi (Railways) won three gold medals each, Sita Jena claimed two gold.
Gopal and Sethi bagged three gold in 53kg and 58kg categories respectively.Sita defeated Rajwant Kaur of Punjab in the clean and jerk category. In snatch, Jena stood second with 76 kg, while Punjab’s Kaur stood first with 79-kg. Overall, in the women’s 63-kg category, Jena defeated the Punjab girl by lifting 181 kg. Food Corporation of India (FCI)’s Gara Aruna Rani stood third.
Altogether, there were 15 participants from Odisha including eight men and seven women.
While Gopal and Jena expressed their pride for having bagged gold in their home town, Commonwealth Games gold medallist K Ravi Kumar, expressed his disappointment, for not being able to participate in the event due to illness.
