At least 33 people were killed as cyclone ‘Thane’, with heavy rain and a wind speed of 140 kms per hour hit the Tamil Nadu coast near Cuddalore on Friday morning, leaving a trail of death and destruction in the State and Puducherry.
As per sources, the storm crossed the coast between Cuddalore and Puducherry bringing torrential rains accompained by heavy winds that uprooted hundreds of trees, roofs and knocked electric poles while snapping power supply in several areas. It also disrupted rail and air operations with services cancelled or rescheduled. The total number of deaths in Tamil Nadu is 26 and 7 in Puducherry.
Moreover, the Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa sanctioned Rs.150 crore towards immediate relief works, including putting back in shape the infrastructure which has taken a hit.
