Paradip: An 18-year-old youth died during his participation in a marathon race, being organised by Paradip Port Trust (PPT) to observe its golden jubliee year on Tuesday.
The youth was identified as Pravakar Behera, son of farmer Paramananda Behera, who is a resident of Khashapadia village under Kendrapada Sadar police station, said source.
It may be noted that more than 300 participants, including sportsmen, students and employees of the State and Central Government were taken part in the marathon that started from Nehru Bungalow and finished at Gopabandhu Stadium.
While Pravakar was running with other participants, he fell down on the ground in the midway. Soon he was taken to PPT hospital, where he was declared dead by the doctors. Later, the body was sent for post-mortem.
Paradip Port Trust Chairman J Jagannath Rao declared 1.5 lakh rupees as compensation for the deceased family and assured to engage his kin in a contractual job, said Paradip SDPO Santanu Dash.
Following the incident, all the events, including prize distributions were postponed till January 13, 2012 by the Paradip Port Trust authorities.
