Bhubaneswar: Prime Minister (PM) Manmohan Singh on Tuesday had a word of praise for the tribal communities of Odisha for their traditional culture, knowledge and innovations in medicine and agriculture.

While addressing his inaugural speech at the 99th Indian Science Congress here at KIIT campus, PM emphasized the need for rejuvenating and exploring the traditional knowledge systems found across the country in areas like agriculture, architecture, handicrafts and textiles.

Singh said, “One need not go futher than the tribal communities of Kharia, Santhals, Gonds and Kolhas, who live in deep forests of Mayurbhanj and have a reservoir of knowledge on medicinal usage of locally available plants.”

On the occasion, Singh feliciated two tribal farmers from Koraput district named Raita Muduli and Chandra Pradhan for promoting resilient farming systems.
