Bhubaneswar: Maoists after planting a land mine on Wednesday, created a tragic situation in Kandhamal district again on Thursday the second day of their two-day Odisha bandh call, by blowing up a police vehicle thereby killing three on the spot and injuring three others.

The deceased were identified as Sunasir Mohanty, Uma Jani, Sangram Lenka. The injured cops were first admitted to a nearby hospital in Kotagada and were later airlifted to SCB Medica College and Hospital at Cuttack. As per sources the condition of the three was critical.

The attack took place in a forested area near Srirampur village, about 380 km from Kandhamal, said Deputy Superitendent of Police G C Behera.

Earlier the Maoists had set fire to four mobile towers in Ganjam district on Tuesday.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed his condolence to the bereaved families.

Apart from bearing the hospital expenses of the three injured persons undergoing treatment, the State Government would provide Rs 8 lakh to the families of each of the deceased. Moreover Rs 10 lakh will be provided as insurance and a job to a dependant member in the family will be provided, a release from the CMO said.
