Bhubaneswar: Defying boycott call by Maoists, people across Odisha took part in the Republic day celebrations today with gaiety and enthusiasm.
Odisha Governor Muralidhar Chandrakant Bhandare unfurled the tricolour in Bhubaneswar. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik hoisted the tri-colour at a function in Cuttack.
Although Maoists had put up posters and banners in Southern and Western parts of the State appealing people to boycott the Republic Day celebrations and observe it as a black day, the day was celebrated with gaiety and enthusiasm.
However some Maoist-affected districts like Malkangiri, Kalahandi and Koraput saw hoisting of black flags by the ultras. Moreover posters and banners were also put up in Kalimela and Motu areas of naxal-hit Malkangiri despite tight security. Similarly, in Kalahandi district black flags and posters were seen in Thuamul Rampur area with a call to boycott the celebrations, sources said.
Elaborate security arrangements were made in the Maoist infested districts with heavy force deployment and intensive patrolling in the view of the threat from the ultras.
