Bhubaneswar: Two Maoists, including a woman, were killed in a fierce exchange of fire with security forces in Koraput district on Thursday evening, police said.

Acting on the basis of an intelligence input, jawans of district voluntary force (DVF) conducted a combing operation in the Naxal-infested Bandhugaon area where a group of red rebels were spotted.

As the ultras and security men came face to face, a fierce encounter erupted in which two Maoists were killed and their bodies recovered, Deputy Iinspector General of Police (south-west), S K Priyadarshi told.

One of the slain Maoists was identified as Sitru Kani Reddy alias V Appana Naidu, an area commander of Jhanjawati division of CPI (Maoist) while the other one was a woman whose identity was yet to be ascertained, he said.

Two rifles, eight live catridges, two kit bags and Maoist literature were seized from the spot.

It is noteworthy to mention that the rebel leader was accused of committing crimes like murder, loot, arson and extortion.

The combing operation was led by Koraput SP Anup Sahoo, Additional SP Santosh Mal Laxmipur, SDPO Y Jagannath Rao and Similiguda IIC Sarat Kumar Sahu.
