Puri: Bhubanananda Sarangi, the headmaster of Pratap Purusottampur High School who had gone on a fast in jail after his arrest in connection with attack on the Panchyati Raj minister, Maheswar Mohanty was shifted to the SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack on Monday as his condition became critical.

Sarangi was arrested after interrogating Balabhadra Bhoi alias Mahari, the main accused in this case. He was then sent to the police custody for 14 days after his bail application was rejected by the magistrate.

Sarangi had gone on an indefinite hunger strike in jail claiming to be innocent. The jail authorities shifted him to the Puri District Headquarters Hospital, after his condition deteriorated.

On the fifth day with loss of substantial weight, the attending doctors felt it was necessary to provide him specialised treatment. He was then referred to the SCB hospital, sources said.
