Malkangiri: In yet another landmine blast a day before the Panchayat polls, Maoists blew up a vehicle, killing four BSF persons and injuring two others in Malkangiri on Friday.
The deceased have been identified as J R Khaswan, Commandant of the 107th BSF Battalion, Rajesh Saran, his Deputy Commandant, Ashok Jadav and Nikhil, both Inspectors. The injured BSF personnels have been identified as Bishnu Pani and Surendra Kumar Pati.
Apart from this two other persons named B C Nayak and Sukant Behera were also injured. The ultras have apparently carried out the attack on the eve of the panchayat polls to derail the election process and create panic among the voters. The Maoists had earlier threatened to boycott the panchayat polls. .
The blast took place in around 30 kms away from Balimela police station, when the personnels were returning after inspecting the security arrangements for the ongoing Panchayat polls. After the explosion more than 50 Maoists surrounded the BSF persons and started firing.
After the incident, more number of forces were sent to the spot. Malkangiri SP Anirudh Singh inspected the place and directed probe into the matter.
