Jagatsinghpur: The ongoing three tier Panchayat polls have carried bad precedent affecting the
social relationship and cracking family relations. Instances are glaring as members of a particular household are contesting elections with one another for one post.
The situation seems precarious for the post of ward member elections as candidates inorder to grab the post are ignoring their social relationships and are cutting affiliation from their communities, caste, creed and religion.
In Katara Panchayat of Tirtol, two daughters in laws of Damodar Mallick namely Bhabani Mallick and Susree Mallick, are contesting for the same post that has endured dilemma in the mind of the voters whom to cast their votes as both the contestants are from one family.
In another instance Harapriya Satpathy from Rambhadeipur Gram Panchayat from Jagatsinghpur block is contesting with her kin Laxmidhar Satapathy for the ward member post.
Moreover Sasu -Bohu (Mother-in -law versus Daughter-in-law), Maa-Pua (Mother versus Son), Maa-Jhia (Mother versus Daughter), Swami- Stree (Husband versus Wife) and Bhai-Bhai (Brother versus Brother) fights are being witnessed for the various posts in ongoing three-tier Panchayat polls.
Charulata Prusty who is contesting for the post of Sarpanch reserved for OBC category revealed that, “It is ironic. I am in the poll fray with my Mother-in-law Susama Prusty as no OBC category women candidate was available in the Panchayat”.
“Since the day of nomination my brother has stopped talking to me as he has filed nomination for the same post for which I am contesting. Even as we are living separately since years, we are blood related brother. God knows how we would retain our relationship after the elections,” says Sudhakar Biswal a Samiti member aspirant.
So it is evident from facts mentioned above that Panchayat polls has made social relationships bitter and has drawn social repercussion thereby affecting social fabric.
Democracy allows every one to contest polls and every one enjoys political freedom participating in any democratic form of elections. Laws and rules of the country are silent to prevent contesting candidates define his social identity and relationship before jumping to elections fray. The consequence is that social relationship among people is getting hurt and that some of them can also never be restored even after the polls.
