Bhubaneswar: The State Budget for the financial year 2012-13 is likely to touch Rs 53,000 crore.

The State Council of Ministers on Friday has approved the Budge for the financial year 2012-13 which will be placed by Finance Minister Prafulla Ghadai on February 24 in the Legislative Assembly.

The provision for different welfare schemes are expected to cross Rs 3, 200 crore. While the plan size has been fixed at Rs 17, 000 crore the non-plan size will touch Rs 34,000 crore, besides a likely provision of Rs 2,000 crore for different Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs).

A people friendly budget is expected from the Government as there has been surplus revenue due to the growth in tax revenue.

However more emphasis will be given on poverty allevation and welfare programmes in the Budget as the poverty position remains the same despite the growth rate.

Apart from this social sectors like health and education will also get more attention in the Budget. The State Government has prepared the 12th Five-Year Plan with focus on infrastructure development and skill enhancement. For skill development, the Government may strengthen the existing vocational educational institutes. More scholarships are likely to be announced for the poor students to pursue higher education in private engineering and medical colleges.

The Budget is also expected to earmark more funds for qualitative and quantitative improvement of school and college educations in the State.
