Bhubaneswar: The Third Phase of panchayat polls in Odisha will be conducted today. The State district administrations has geared up to hold the second phase of voting today in 1, 350 Gram Panchayats, 188 ZP zones covering 1350 Panchayat Samitis. As many as 53.88 lakh voters are expected to exercise their franchise in 19, 068 booths to decide the fate of the candidates for the posts of Ward Member, Sarpanch, Samiti Member and ZP member.
All security arrangements are made for peaceful, free and fair poll today. Voting will be recorded from 7 am to 12 noon.
Meanwhile the ruling BJD has reportedly registered victory in 275 Zilla Parisad seats out of the 391 in the first and second phase of the panchayat elections. As per the sources BJD has won 70.33 percent, Congress 16.6 percent and BJP 4.6 Percent Zilla Parisad seats in these two rounds.
Opposition Congress and BJP however attributed the ruling party’s victory as the result of huge money power and muscle power of the ruling BJD. BJP president Jual Oram made similar allegations against the BJD and hoped that in next phases his party would fare well.
BJD Rajya Sabha MP Pyari Mohan Mohapatra dismissed the Opposition allegations and said it has become a habit of the Opposition to accuse BJD after win in every election.
The SEC had ordered re-poll in 32 wards in nine blocks covering seven districts — Baragarah, Boudh, Cuttack, Gajapati, Jajpur, Puri and Rayagada — following incidents of violence, booth rigging, looting and burning of ballot boxes.
