Bhubaneswar: In the wake of election violence, the Odisha Government on Tuesday for the first time has decided to provide compensation to poll personnel in case of death due to violence, including explosion of mines, bombs or an attack.
As per the rules followed by Election Commission of India (ECI), the compensation amount has been fixed for the employees divided in two categories. Category A polling personnel would get Rs 10 lakh in compensation and an amount of Rs 5 lakh would be given to Category B personnel.
Employees engaged in polling and counting of votes, section officers, supervisors, magistrates, homeguards, forest guards, gram rakhis, Government and privately engaged drivers and their helpers will come under the category A. Similarly Central Para Military Forces (CPMFs) engaged in election duty have been categorised as ‘B’ grade employees.
An ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh and Rs 2.5 lakh would be given in the event of death due to other reasons during the election work.
The Commission has also announced relief for partial disabilities and injuries depending on the severity of the case.
The family members of the deceased or disabled can seek the compensation within three months. The Commission has directed that the compensation is to be provided within one month of the receipt of the application.
