Bhubaneswar: Current champions Utkal University stormed into the semifinals of the SOA Premier League (SPL), being conducted by the Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan Deemed University (SOAU), when they crushed Gitam University, Visakhapatnam, convincingly by six wickets in a Group-D match at the SOA Stadium on Tuesday.

Gitam won the toss and decided to bat first. Gitam’s innings was spearheaded by A.Sushant 52 who hit five sixes and a four while medium pacer Prakash Mishra (3/18) and left arm spinner Sudipta Swain (2/29) shared the spoils for the winners. Utkal bowled out the visitors for 123 in 17.4 overs.

Utkal’s chase began disastrously when they lost one of their openers off the first ball of the innings. But Soubhagya Mishra (47) and Priyatosh Parmanik (45) played blistering knocks to take the team to victory. Mishra hit four sixes and an equal number of boundaries while Parmanik hit three sixes and five fours. Utkal won the chase in a whirlwind fashion reaching the target in only 13.4 overs.

Earlier on Sunday Utkal had won their other match in the group against Vinayak Missions University by a huge 159 runs.
