Bhubaneswar: Congress Chief Whip Prasad Harichandan on Thursday criticized Women and Child Development Minister Anjali Behera in the State Assembly on Thursday for ‘misleading the House’ by placing wrong information.
Behera found herself in an embarrassing situation in the Assembly, when replying to a question by Congress Chief Whip Prasad Harichandan regarding the quantum of loan provided to the women Shelf Help Groups (SHGs), she said that no credit linkage was being provided to self-help groups (SHGs) under Mission Shakti in the State.
Harichandan rubbished the Minister’s reply as untrue. “The budget outcome of Mission Shakti dwells upon bank loans and credit linkage. Even the State-Level Bankers’ Committee (SLBC) report also states the quantum of credit that has been given to SHGs and also the target for banks. The goals and objectives in the Mission Shakti document also state about credit linkage,” he noted.
“Even after 11 years of the scheme, you are not aware of it. Funds provided to SHGs every year for credit linkage have been mentioned in the budget, but you are saying no credit linkage policy exists,” Harichandan added.
Behera attempted to rectify herself, saying since 2009-10 revolving funds have been set up at gram panchayat and block levels to aid the SHGs. Each block is being provided Rs 25 lakh a year to be given as loan at 10% interest, she added. Besides, micro credit support of Rs 5000 is being extended to different SHGs. But her clarification evoked resentment and anger among the Opposition members, who got off from their seats and shouted slogans against her.
As the chaos continued, the Speaker asked the agitating members to go to their seats and help run the House. The Speaker asked Behera to provide a detail reply to the members.
