Dhenkanal: Bikash Chandra Sahoo, a Post-graduate Diploma student in Odia Journalism at Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), Dhenkanal has bagged the Dr. Radhanath Rath Memorial Fellowship award for the 2011-12 academic session.
The award has been given to him for his best performance in the first semester exam in Odia journalism. Mr. Abhaya Padhi, Retd. D.G Prasar Bharati gave away the Fellowship, which has been instituted by eminent economist Prof. Nilakantha Rath in 2002 in memory of his father late Dr. Radhanath Rath, one of greater editors of Odisha.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Padhi stated that the Samaj has immensely contributed for the growth of journalism in Odisha. Dr. Radhanath Rath was a great journalist, who worked for the development of the State.
He further added that media has a significant role to play in a developing country like India where a large section of people are deprived of basic needs.
The award carries a cash prize of rupees ten thousand and a certificate.
Dr. Rath was a freedom fighter and the recipient of Country’s third highest civilian award, the Padma Bhushan. He along with Gapabandhu Das started the weekly magazine Samaj in 1919. It became daily in 1930. Dr. Rath took the editorship of the Samaj in 1946. He joined active politics and held several key portfolios in Odisha Government between 1952 and 1961. He returned back to the Samaj again as the editor and served till his death in 1998.
