Bhubaneswar: Proceedings in the State Assembly was stalled for the second consecutive day on Tuesday as the House was hit by the protests of Opposition Congress and BJP legislators over Speaker Pradip Amat’s refusal to allow a discussion on the recent hooch tragedy in the Cuttack and Khurda district, that claimed as many as 40 lives.

The issue resurfaced for the second day on the day with the Congress the Opposition trooped into the well of the House and shouted slogans, demanding a discussion on the serious issue as the House assembled in the morning and the question hour began.

Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh again on Tuesday wanted to know why the Speaker had disallowed the debate on the adjournment on the hooch tragedy.

Singh said that the Government is afraid of the discussion as the Opposition wants the resignation of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who is primarily responsible for the tragedy.

However, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Raghu Nath Mohanty rejected the Opposition’s argument, stating that since the issue was related to the hooch tragedy and was being probed by the judicial commission, there was no scope for debate in the House. The Speaker had already given his ruling and the Opposition should not press for a discussion on the issue.

Irked over the statement of the Minister, Hariachandan alleged that the Parliamentary Affairs Minister was influencing the Speaker and the conduct of the House.

The pandemonium continued, the Speaker adjourned the House till lunch hour. The Speaker then adjourned the House for the day as normalcy did not return to the House even after the lunch hour.
