Puri: Noted Geologist Professor Manmohan Mohanty on Thursday ruled out any danger of Tsunami to Odisha coast and said there was no trace of trenches underneath the Odisha coast line, which were responsible to trigger a Tsunami.

Addressing the delegates in a workshop on erosion on beaches, Professor Mohanty, however, opined that there was some movement under three thousand metres deep inside the earth of Puri which was visible as often tumbling down of stones from the Sri Jagannath temple.

He said the reported tilting of high-rise buildings along the Puri beach as reported in a section of the press was not based on any material facts and there was no report from any quarter about tilting of buildings.

The Geologist said the nature has its own mechanism to correct the lapses such as erosion of beaches.

The year-long study and data collected reflected that there was very nominal effect of soil erosion along the state coast.

The data gathered says while the average loss of soil was only 0.12 in Chandrabhaga beach at SahuKhanata along the Puri Konark marine drive road it was only 0.15 in Puri and about same in the Chilika lagoon area, he said.

Whatever soil erosion was found were outcome of human excess like encroachment of natural course of sea, sand mining, destruction of mangroves and sand mounds, the natural barriers preventing the ingress of the sea to landward, Professor Mohanty said.
