Bhubaneswar: One person was killed and another seriously injured on Sunday when the Howrah-Puri Duronto Express hit a passenger vehicle at an unmanned level-crossing near Barithengarh, which is located between Dhanmandal and Kapilas Road.
The deceased has been identified as Debendra Sahu (35), who died on the spot while another person named Mayadhar Sahu was admitted to the hospital in a critical state, sources said.
Meanwhile, strong protests by the locals demanding the unmanned level-crossing be converted into a manned one, brought movement of the trains along the busy route to a complete halt on Sunday evening. Long-distance trains were detained at various stations on either side of Barithengarh.
The incident occured on the Up route but to add to the woes of the passengers, the angry locals blocked the Down route also preventing movement of trains on both the lines resulting in a complete breakdown of train traffic along the Howrah-Chennai route.
All major trains emanating from Puri and Bhubaneswar were detained at Puri, Bhubaneswar or at Cuttack. Similarly, trains coming from other side were controlled at Bhadrak.
