Bhubaneswar: The Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA), a constituent of Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) has completed 25 years in the field of freshwater aquaculture research and development. In commemoration of Silver Jubilee Year CIFA has organised National Conference on ‘Aquaculture: Fish for Billion’ during March 16-17, 2012.
The conference was inaugurated by Sri Ramesh Chandra Majhi, Fisheries Minister, Odisha. Among other dignitaries who spoke on the occasion were Sri Tarun Sridhar, Joint Secretary, Dept. of Animal Husbandry, Diary and Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India; Dr S D Singh, Assistant Director General, ICAR; Dr S D Tripathi, Ex-Director, CIFA; Dr C Vasudevappa, CEO, National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), Hyderabad and Dr E Sailesh, Ex director, CMFRI.
During the conference important areas in aquaculture development including bloodstock up-gradation and quality seed production, species and system diversification, fish feed, disease diagnostics, health management, post harvesting and marketing were discussed.
It is noteworthy to mention that, many recearchers, farmers, students, entrepreneurs and stake holders from all across the country attended the conference.
A book on “25 years of research in freshwater aquaculture” and a CD on “Aquaculture Innovators” were also released during the ceremony, said Dr H K De.
