Bhubaneswar: The ruling BJD supremo, Naveen Patnaik announced the name of 81-year old noted Sarvodaya leader and social worker A V Swamy as the third independent candidate for the upcomming Rajya Sabha elections on Saturday.
In a press confernce CM, Naveen Patnaik said, A V Swamy is the befitting candidate for the third independent seat in Rajya Sabha polls. Apart from being the BDO in Koraput district in 1961, he was also the field director of Oxfam and he was also very well known to Biju Patnaik way back in 1960.
Patnaik on Friday had announced the names of two candidates, hockey star and Padmashree awardee Dilip Tirkey and longtime Biju associate Rabi Mohapatra, for two of the three Rajya Sabha seats and said that the party would not field any third candidate.
It is noteworthy to mention that while the ruling BJD has 103 members in the 147-member Assembly, there are four NCP and a CPI members in the House. Congress has 27 members and BJP has six. There are also three Independents.
