Bhubaneswar: Ruling BJD candidate Ranendra Pratap Swain alias Raja Swain captured the seat of the Athgarh constituency defeating Suresh Mohapatra of Congress by a margin of 47,390 votes.
Altogether 10 candidates were in the poll fray for the seat. While BJD’s Ranendra Pratap Swain got 87, 306 votes, Suresh Mohapatra of Congress got 40, 214 votes. BJP candidate Bikram Dash got only 2, 452 votes altogether.
It may be noted here that Swain could not contest the 2009 assembly poll from Athgarh as his nomination paper was rejected. The former minister challenged the rejection in the Orissa High Court which declared the election of Independent MLA Ramesh Chandra Rout as null and void.
Rout challenged the Orissa High Court judgement in the Supreme Court which upheld the earlier order. The Supreme Court also directed the Election Commission of India to conduct by-elections for Athgarh.
