Bhubaneswar: The voice of a 40-year- old man, Bijaya from Nayagada district was regained after a rare surgery by surgeons at Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) .
Bijaya had lost his voice and experienced abnormal breathing after a road accident two years back. He was breathing through an opening made externally over trachea (tracheostomy)
since the accident.
At KIMS, laryngofissure and removal of abnormal tissue from narrowed
segment of trachea were done using ‘Coblator’. This is a new technique
performed for the first time in Odisha.
The patient successfully regained his voice immediately after the surgery and the voice was recorded. The surgerywas conducted by Dr. Khageswar Rout, Dr. Anil Ku Das under supervision of
Prof. R. N. Biswal in Ear-Nose-Throat Department of KIMS.
