Bhubaneswar: In the wake of a breach in the company’s ash pond that damaged standing crops in the locality, the Orissa State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) on Saturday directed the closure of the captive power plant (CPP) of Hindalco Industries Limited’s aluminium unit at Hirakud in Sambalpur district.

The ash pond in Hindalco developed a leakage on Thursday night, and led to overflow of ash water in the agriculture fields of nearby villages resulting in crop destruction.

OSPCB’s action came after its officials took stock of the actions taken by the company after an ash pond breach incident on August 8.

Though the company put up sand bags at the damaged portion to temporarily deal with the crisis, heavy rains on Thursday breached portion again and large volume of ash slurry flowed into adjoining fields and irrigation canal upto about 10 km.

However, the Company has been allowed to draw power from th grid to keep its smelter in operational condition.

Apart from this,OSPCB has also asked the company to give adequate compensation to the land owners whose crops have been damaged due to ash water.
