Bhubaneswar: Expressing serious concern over the acute fertiliser crisis faced by the farmers in the state, the Opposition Congress on Monday sharply criticized the ruling BJD, after Speaker Pradip Amat turned down its notice for a special discussion on the fertiliser shortage crisis and other farmer related issues in the State.

Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh of Congress said that the ruling party was fearing a debate on the fertiliser issue.

Congress chief whip Prasad Harichandan said that the fertiliser shortage is seriously affecting agricultural productivity in the state. So the matter should be debated in the House. However, the issue was not taken up because the state government was fearing a backlash.

Similarly BJP legislature party leader K V Singhdeo said it was the Speaker’s privilege to take a decision on whether a matter would be debated in the House.

“If this issue is not possible today, the Speaker may allow a discussion on it tomorrow,” Singhdeo added.

However, defending the Speaker, ruling BJD members said there was no provision in the rules to take up adjournment motion every day as there are 18 bills pending for passage in the Assembly.
