Bhubaneswar: The Orissa High court on Tuesday directed the state government to pay an interim compensation of Rs one lakh each to the families of the deceased who lost their lives in the anganwadi centre wall collapse mishap at Suansia Sahi in Nayagarh district on July 9.

The court’s direction came in response to the PIL filed by advocate Dilip Mohapatra, who had sought adequate compensation for the families of the victims.

Similarly city-based Centre for Legal Aid to Poor (CLAP) and social activist Prabir Das, who is also a lawyer of the HC, had also filed separate PILs with almost similar prayers seeking judicial intervention for stringent actions against the erring officials for whose negligence the tragedy took place.

The division bench of Chief justice V Gopala Gowda and Justice B N Mohapatra also directed the state government to initiate criminal proceedings against officials responsible for the mishap.

The state government has so far paid Rs 2.10 lakh compensation to each of the bereaved families. The next hearing of the case has been fixed on September 18.
