Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Shri Naveen Patnaik will review the status of the Lower Suktel irrigation project in Balangir district today.
Earlier in a letter to the Chief Minister, Former OPCC president Sarat Patnaik had sought the intervention of Shri Patnaik for the immediate initiation of the project.
Sarat in his letter had said that the work of the project has not yet started even after 17 years of its sanction despite public demand. The project was sanctioned in 1994-95 and the then chief minister Biju Patnaik was very concerned about the development of Balangir district.
“It is a matter of great concern that work is not progressing as expected,” Sarat added.
Stating that Balangir is one of the drought affected districts from where mass migration takes place every year, Sarat said that only four percent of agricultural land is under irrigation even after 65 years of Independence.
Apart from this Congress MLAs Santosh Singh Saluja and Surendra Singhbhoi had also staged a dharna in the Well of the Assembly during the ongoing session demanding initiation of construction work of the project forthwith and Law Minister Raghunath Mohanty had announced in the House that work for the project would start from September 27.
