Bhubaneswar: In a major development, Governor Shri M C Bhandare on Wednesday ordered a Lokpal probe into the violence and the ‘police excesses’ on the demonstrating party workers during the massive ‘Parivartan’ rally organised by Congress Party for the Gherao of the Odisha assembly on September 6.

The move came in response to the demand by an eight-member delegation led by OPCC President Niranjan Patnaik who had met Bhandare on September 13 and had submitted a memorandum demanding action against the police whom they alleged acted in a most uncivilised and barbaric manner.

Accusing the police of instigating violence at the rally, the memorandum said police personnel exceeded all limits by assaulting innocent and unarmed people who had come from across the State.

Congress had also called an Odisha Bandh on September 10 in protest against alleged police excess.

It is noteworthy to mention that, the violence during the Congress rally had drawn wide attention. The thrashing of a woman constable by a Congress protestor during the rally had also triggered wide spread outrage.

National Commission for Women (NCW) member Dr. Charu Walikhanna accompanied by probe panel member Manasi Pradhan, a social activist was also probing into the matter. They had visited the city and had met the injured woman cop.
