Bhubaneswar: In a bid to facilitate the decision to make the Odisha slum free, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in a letter to Union Minister of Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation, Kumari Selja on Wednesday, urged to include Balasore, Jeypore, Jharsuguda, Jajpur (including Jajpur Road) in the Centre’s Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY).
“The State Government is fully committed to make the State slum free and has formulated a comprehensive policy for this purpose. We are also in the process of making a legislation for according property rights to slum dwellers and preventing the growth of new slums”, Patnaik said in the letter.
It is noteworthy to mention that at present six cities of Odisha including Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Berhampur, Rourkela, Sambalpur and Puri are covered under the RAY. Till now 2 pilot projects namely Rangamatia and Mahisakhal slums in Bhubaneswar have been sanctioned.
“Owing to the growth of cities and the incidence of slums in the State,it is essential to expand the coverage under RAY by including Balasore, Jeypore, Jharsuguda and Jajpur under the scheme”, Patnaik added.
The main objective of the Yojana is to give shelter to the homeless and make the country free from slums. The Yojana also seeks to provide property rights to the slum dwellers.
