Bhubaneswar: A day after Governor Shri M C Bhandare ordered a Lokpal probe into the violence and the ‘police excesses’ on the demonstrating party workers during the massive ‘Parivartan’ rally organised by Congress Party for the Gherao of the Odisha assembly on September 6, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Thursday said that the people know who were responsible for the incident.

It was for the first time that Bhandare directed the Lokpal to probe the clash by invoking section 18 of the Lokpal Act and directly referred the matter for investigation.

While Patnaik was embarrassed over Bhandare’s direction for a Lokpal probe into the clash without consulting the State Government, the Opposition Congress welcomed Bhandare’s decision.

“They (State Government) had held us responsible. Now we are hopeful that truth will prevail,” said AICC in-charge of Odisha Jagdish Tytler.

The police have registered cases against senior Congress leaders including Jagdish Tytler and OPCC President Niranjan Patnaik holding them responsible for the clash.

Senior Congress leaders on the other hand have been accusing the police personnel that they exceeded all limits by assaulting innocent and unarmed people who had come from across the State.

It is noteworthy to mention that the violence during the Congress rally had drawn wide attention. Apart from this the thrashing of a woman constable by a Congress protestor during the rally had also triggered wide spread outrage.
