Bhubaneswar: Suspended Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Pyari Mohan Mohapatra on Sunday announced the formation of the Odisha Jana Morcha (OJM), a political forum to establish internal democracy in the State’s ruling party.
“The forum will work to establish internal democracy and protect the rights of the workers in the party,” Morcha spokesperson Jagneswar Babu told.
It is noteworthy to mention that the formation of OJM came amidst a variety of speculations in Odisha political circles ever since Mohapatra, who had been the Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s non-official advisor for over a decade, was suspended from the party for allegedly plotting a political coup to unseat Patnaik from power on May 29 when Patnaik was away in an official tour to Britain.
Mohapatra will announce more details about the new forum once it takes a proper shape, said Babu, adding that the new outfit is a forum inside the BJD and will work for greater democracy within.
While opposition parties see the developement as an outcome of the infighting in ruling BJD, State Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kalpataru Das said the forum will not have any impact on the popularity of the BJD.
Reacting to the new development, Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee President Niranjan Patnaik said, “If Mohapatra has launched the forum to help the people of the state, we welcome it.”
BJP leader Bijoy Mohapatra said, “It’ll widen internal disputes within BJD, partially affecting State politics”.
