Bhubaneswar: Keeping an eye on the urban local body polls in early 2013 and the general election in 2014, both the ruling BJD and the Opposition Congress are ready for a trial face-off during their respective Padyatras starting from today.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik flagged off the BJD ‘Padyatra’ from Ekamra constituency in Bhubaneswar. Several Ministers, MPs, MLAs and senior leaders are set to lead the ‘Padayatras’ in their respective constituencies across the State during the ten-day long ‘Padyatra’ to create awareness among the people about the development projects launched by the State Government.

“The Government has taken several welfare measures in the past and we are telling people about these. BJD leaders and workers are carrying out similar yatras in other towns and villages,” a party leader said.

The BJD Padyatra will conclude on October 11, 2012.

Opposition Congress on the other hand during its eight-day long ‘Padyatra’ from Swaraj Ashram in Cuttack, aims to gain public support by creating awareness among the people about the involvement of the State Government in several large-scale corruption and irregularities including coal block allocation.

“We are telling people how the government has taken the state backwards,” state Congress chief Niranjan Patnaik said.

The Congress ‘Padyatra’ will conclude on October 9, 2012.
