Bhubaneswar: In a bid to create interest in studies among the students in backward areas and to encourage them to attend school, the State Government on Tuesday launched a bicycle scheme for all the Class X students from the BPL families.
Inaugurating the scheme at a function on Gandhi Jayanti at the Capital High School, Bhubaneswar, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik handed over cheques of Rs 2600 each to some students.
Flagging off a procession of girl students with new bicycles, Patnaik said his government’s free bicycles for girls of all categories and boys of scheduled caste and scheduled tribe boys have yielded a satisfactory result.
The state government has launched the Rs 135 crore bicycle scheme covering 5.20 lakh students in state run schools. All girl students of Class X including BPL families, were earlier included in the bicycle scheme.
Among other, Minister of State for School and Mass Education Rabinarayan Nanda, MP Shri Prasanna Patasani, MLAs Ashok Panda, Bijoy Mohanty and Bhagirathi Badajena and School and Mass Education Secretary Usha Padhee graced the function.
